Geography at the movies Blog returns!

For those of you that do not know Geography at the Movies started life as a blogger blog, which I have kept for sentimental value. Instead of trying to build a website out of a blog I will just have a blog that has a focus on using video in Geography from an online perspective. If you wish to visit you are more than welcome if not I doubt you will regret it!

I will post movie news on the blog from now on.

Some contributors to geography at the movies had some trouble keeping up with updates. So to solve this problem here is the geography at the movies blip.tv blog that has all movies on the site in date order. So you will not miss a thing!

Easter Island

Helen Edmondson has developed some further Easter Island resources. She has found the topic very motivating for pupils, I can vouch for that also.

If you do not know the story...It is well worth a google search or follow the link below. It has a great deal of potential for a number of topics.

London Bombings

It is now just over a year on from the 7th July London Bombings.

I have very quickly developed some resources to support teaching and learning about this event, with a focus on the recent London Assembley Report.

I used the BBC News In Depth: London Attacks as a resource.

New! Flash Movie

Some excellent news! All WMM movies on geography at the movies are now available in Flash.

Why is this excellent news?

The main weakness of this website (and there are many) is that you can not gain access to a movie instantly and they have to be downloaded. This is due to the size of the files which are not easily streamed through the internet. I am sure you agree this can take a long time!

Clicking on the red Flash Movie link for each movie will allow the movie to start playing instantly as long as you have Flash installed. No need to download and they start in a few seconds. This can also be used to preview movies instantly. However I still suggest downloading for best quality.

I think this will save users of the movies a great deal of time. Feedback as always welcome!

New! Flash Movie

This effect in movie maker allows to videos to be played split screen which I am sure you agree could have a number of uses in the classroom. Information of how to do this is here.

New! Flash Movie

Full version now available! click here

Dan Raven-Ellison has asked me to advertise a fantastic video resource. Dan has made a virtual video transect through London which is a great idea! The resource includes 108 video clips at 27 points across London.

This website makes not profit from the sale or hosting of this resource. This is a great resource and will be of value to many geography teachers. This is why I have I have decided to host the advert.

I am sure you all must have seen the excellent resources produced by Noel Jenkins. This video is a small offering of thanks from me and also makes an effective starter for the lesson.

Geog Gun

Flash Movie

"Geog Gun" like "Top Gun" but for Geography! I very much enjoyed making this and although the result is not great...I hope you can see what I am trying to do. In short Air Force Jet crashes in the Amazon Rainforest. They can then complete a "jungle diary" or some creative writing on what happens next? I will develop this more when I have time I have many ideas (but not enough time) e.g. planning rescue operation (maps, equipment, dealing with the environment).

Importantly, it uses a video from Google Earth which I recorded using the evaluation version of fraps. Very simple to do and the evaluation version allows you to record 30 seconds of footage.

What is bluescreen and Chroma Key?You will need a bright blue background it must be evenly lit with no shadows. On this background film your movie. Once put into movie maker and the "bluescreen" transition used all the blue can be replaced with another image or movie this will run in the background. Whats best is that it is free! The file and guide you need are available for download below.Good luck!
